Activated carbon has special properties that allow it to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, and other gaseous pollutants from the air. It accomplishes this in a way that is different from other air purifiers like HEPA that only filter particle pollution from the air.

Two of biochar’s key properties are its low thermal conductivity and its ability to absorb water up to 5 times its weight. These properties mean that biochar is just the right material for insulating buildings and regulating humidity. In combination with clay, but also with lime and cement mortar, biochar can be used as an additive for plaster or for bricks and concrete elements at a ratio of up to 80%.

WHY EMPHASIS ON BIOCHAR?

Biochar possesses high thermal and chemical stability, excellent electric conductivity, and a great surface area compared to natural fibers. Suitable pyrolysis conditions lead to uniform carbon-based and porous structures, potentially containing abundant functional groups, which could interact with polymer functionalities when biochar is embedded into the host matrix. Biochar is also a much more sustainable replacement to traditional carbon blacks. Biochar also allows us to have direct impact on smallholder farmers worldwide and ensure that we are a carbon negative effort.
